Fra' Ludwig Hoffmann von Rumerstein (born January 21, 1937 – died December 13, 2022) was an important leader in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. He served as the Grand Commander of this ancient organization. For a few months in 2017, he was even the acting head of the Order.

Who Was Fra' Ludwig Hoffmann-Rumerstein?
Fra' Ludwig Hoffmann von Rumerstein was born in Innsbruck, Austria. His full name was Ludwig Franz Xaver Irenäus Joseph Peter Raimund Maria Hoffmann von Rumerstein. He became a significant figure in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
His Early Life and Studies
Ludwig Hoffmann-Rumerstein's parents were Ernst Hoffmann von Rumerstein and Baroness Pia Riccabona von Reichenfels. He grew up in Austria.
He studied law at the University of Innsbruck. He finished his law degree in 1962. After that, he studied philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Once he completed his military service, he worked as a lawyer. He practiced law in Innsbruck from 1970 until 2002.
Working with the Order of Malta
Hoffmann-Rumerstein started his work with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta as a volunteer. This organization helps people in need around the world.
Starting as a Volunteer
In 1968, he helped create the Order's volunteer group in North Tyrol, Austria. Two years later, in 1970, he officially joined the Order. He became a Knight of Honour and Devotion. From 1971 to 1979, he led the volunteer group in Innsbruck. He also served on the board of directors for the Malteser Hospitaldienst Austria from 1979 to 1986. This group provides hospital services.
Becoming a Leader
In 1984, Hoffmann-Rumerstein took special vows to become a Knight of Justice. In the same year, he was chosen to be part of the Order's Sovereign Council. This council helps lead the organization.
He served as the Grand Commander of the Order from 1994 to 2004. He was chosen for this important role again in 2014.
Acting Head of the Order
From January to April 2017, Hoffmann-Rumerstein became the acting head of the Order. He was called the Lieutenant ad interim. This happened after Fra' Matthew Festing resigned as the Prince and Grand Master. Hoffmann-Rumerstein held this position until April 29, 2017. Then, Fra' Giacomo dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto was elected as the new Lieutenant of the Grand Master.
His Later Years and Passing
Fra' Ludwig Hoffmann-Rumerstein passed away in Innsbruck, Austria, on December 13, 2022. He was 85 years old.
