Luftflotte 4 facts for kids
Luftflotte 4 (which means Air Fleet 4) was a main part of the German Luftwaffe (air force) during World War II. It was created on March 18, 1939, in Vienna. This air fleet was later renamed Luftwaffenkommando 4 on April 21, 1945, and then became part of Luftflotte 6.
Luftflotte 4 was known for its role in the bombing of Stalingrad. This attack caused huge destruction and loss of life. The air fleet was based in several countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, parts of Southeast Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, and areas of Russia that were occupied by Germany. Its job was to support the Axis forces on the Eastern Front. In 1944, its main command office was in Morczyn, Hungary.

- Generalfeldmarschall Wolfram Freiherr von Richthofen was in command from July 20, 1942, to September 4, 1943.
- Generaloberst Otto Deßloch took over from September 4, 1943, to August 17, 1944.
- Generalleutnant Alexander Holle led for a short time, from August 25, 1944, to September 27, 1944.
- Generaloberst Otto Deßloch returned to command from September 28, 1944, until April 21, 1945.
