Luing cattle (pronounced ling cattle) are a special type of beef cow. They were first created in 1947 on the island of Luing in Scotland. This island is part of the Inner Hebrides. The Cadzow brothers developed this breed. They wanted a strong cow that could raise calves well, even in bad weather.

Luing cattle are a mix of two other breeds. They are three-quarters Beef Shorthorn and one-quarter Highland cattle. These cows are medium-sized and very tough. They usually have a red-brown coat. The British government officially recognized the Luing breed in 1965. Today, these cattle are still farmed in Scotland and other parts of the world.

The Story of Luing Cattle

The Luing cattle breed was started by three brothers: Ralph, Denis, and Shane Cadzow. They began their work in 1947. They mixed two different types of cattle to create the Luing. They used a female Highland and a male Beef Shorthorn. This was the first new cattle breed made in Britain in over 100 years!

The brothers chose the Highland cattle for their toughness. This is why Luing cattle are so hardy today. They picked the Shorthorn for its good meat quality. Through careful breeding, the brothers developed the Luing cattle we see now. In 1965, the British Government officially recognized the breed.

Where Are Luing Cattle Today?

The Cadzow family still farms on the island of Luing. The Luing cattle breed is very popular on nearby islands too. These include Scarba and Torsa. Luing cattle have also been sent to other countries. You can find them in places like Canada and New Zealand. People value them for being tough and easy to handle. Their meat is also known for its good quality.

What Makes Luing Cattle Special?

Luing cows are known for living a long time. An average Luing cow can give birth to about 10 calves in her lifetime. This long life is thought to come from their Highland cattle ancestors. Luing cattle usually have medium-length hair. Their coats are typically red or a color called dun.
