Luis Alberto Cubilla Almeida (born March 28, 1940 – died March 3, 2013) was a famous Uruguayan football player and coach. He was known as "El Negro." Cubilla had an amazing career, winning 16 big titles as a player. Later, he became one of the most successful coaches in South America. As a manager, he won 17 major titles.

Early Football Days

Cubilla was born in Paysandú, Uruguay. He started playing football in the youth team of Colón de Paysandú. In 1957, he joined Peñarol, a very famous club. With Peñarol, he helped win four Uruguayan league championships. They also won two Copa Libertadores and one Copa Intercontinental. These are huge international club tournaments.

Playing Career Highlights

In 1962, Cubilla moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. There, he helped the team win the Copa del Rey in 1963. He played 49 games for Barcelona and scored 12 goals.

Cubilla returned to South America in 1964. He joined River Plate in Argentina. In 1969, he went back to Uruguay to play for Nacional. With Nacional, he won four more Uruguayan league titles. He also won another Copa Libertadores, a Copa Interamericana, and another Copa Intercontinental.

Towards the end of his playing career, he played for Santiago Morning in Chile. Then he joined Defensor Sporting in Uruguay. He helped Defensor Sporting win their first league championship ever. This was a big deal because it broke the long winning streak of Peñarol and Nacional.

Between 1959 and 1974, Cubilla played 38 games for the Uruguay national team. He scored 11 goals for his country. He also played in three World Cups: in 1962, 1970, and 1974.

Coaching Success

As a coach, Luis Cubilla became incredibly successful. He had his biggest achievements with Olimpia Asunción in Paraguay. He led Olimpia to win 7 international titles and many national championships.

He also coached other famous clubs. These included Nacional, Peñarol, and Defensor Sporting in Uruguay. He managed Atlético Nacional in Colombia and Newell's Old Boys and River Plate in Argentina. He also coached Cerro Porteño and Club Libertad in Paraguay.

From 1991 to 1993, Luis Cubilla was the head coach of the Uruguay National Team. His older brother, Pedro Cubilla, worked as his assistant. In 1994, he coached the well-known Argentine club Racing Club de Avellaneda. In 2007, Cubilla signed with the Ecuadorian team Barcelona de Guayaquil.

In 2010, he returned to coach Olimpia Asunción again. Luis Cubilla passed away in Asunción at the age of 72.
