Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Luis Antonio Fernández de Córdoba y Spínola (born September 20, 1704, in Madrid – died January 14, 1768, in Madrid) was an important Spanish nobleman. He held many high titles, like the 11th Duke of Medinaceli. He worked for the Spanish Royal Family.

Life of Luis Antonio

Luis Antonio was the oldest son of Nicolás Fernández de Córdoba, 10th Duke of Medinaceli and Jerónima María Spínola y de la Cerda.

Besides his many noble titles, he was a high-ranking military officer. He served as a Lieutenant General in the Royal Armies. He was also a Captain in the King's Royal Guard Company.

In 1747, King Ferdinand VI of Spain sent him to Naples. He went as a special ambassador. His job was to be the godfather for the new baby prince, Infante Felipe Pascual. This baby was the son of the King of Naples and Sicily. For this important task, Luis Antonio received a special award called the collar of the Golden Fleece.

In 1749, the King gave him another important job: Caballerizo mayor. This meant he was in charge of the royal stables and everything related to the King's horses and travel. He kept this job even when the new King, Charles III of Spain, came to power. He held this position until he died.

In 1766, there were big protests in Madrid called the Esquilache Riots. Luis Antonio tried to help calm things down, but he was not successful.

Luis Antonio married María Teresa de Moncada and Benavides on November 19, 1722. She became the 7th Duchess of Camiña after her father passed away in 1727. They had one son and three daughters:
