Playing Football
Luis Helguera was born in Ferrol, Spain. He grew up in Santander, where he played football in the youth teams of Racing Club.
Early Career
He started his senior career with a team called CD Manchego. Later, he joined Real Zaragoza. He mostly played for their reserve team, Zaragoza B. He also played a few games for the main Zaragoza team in La Liga, Spain's top football league.
Moving to Italy
After his older brother, Iván Helguera, played in Italy, Luis also moved there. He played for Udinese Calcio for two years. During that time, he also played on loan for Deportivo Alavés back in Spain.
He stayed in Italy for five more seasons. He mostly played in Serie B, which is Italy's second-highest league. His last team in Italy was Vicenza Calcio.
Return to Spain
In 2008, Luis Helguera came back to Spain. He signed with SD Huesca, a team that had just moved up to Segunda División, Spain's second division.
He played almost every game for Huesca. He helped them stay in the second division for four years. In the 2010–11 season, he received 20 yellow cards in 37 matches. This was the highest number in the league that year.
Luis Helguera stopped playing football in June 2013. He was 37 years old. He played 185 games and scored eight goals for Huesca.
After Playing Football
After retiring as a player, Luis Helguera took on new roles in football.
Managerial Roles
He became the general manager for SD Huesca. In October 2013, he also worked as an assistant coach. He helped the manager, David Amaral. He left this coaching role in March 2014 but stayed with the club in other positions.
Technical Secretary and Sporting Director
On August 6, 2015, Luis Helguera became the technical secretary for UD Las Palmas. This role involves helping with player transfers and team planning. He left this job in April 2018.
He then joined Levante UD in a similar role on May 21, 2018. He stayed there for about a year.
On March 2, 2020, Luis Helguera returned to Las Palmas. This time, he became their sporting director. This is a very important role where he helps manage the club's football operations. He signed a contract to stay until June 2023.
Family Life
Luis Helguera is the younger brother of Iván Helguera. Iván was also a famous football player. He played as a defender for big clubs like Real Madrid and Valencia. He also played for the Spanish national team. Both brothers played football in Italy during their careers.
