Luis López Piquer (born October 21, 1802, in Valencia; died June 5, 1865, in Madrid) was a famous Spanish painter. He came from a family of artists! His father, Vicente López Portaña, and his brother, Bernardo López Piquer, were also very well-known painters.

Luis López Piquer's Life

Luis López Piquer was born in 1802. His father was a very important painter for King Ferdinand VII. Because of his father's connections, Luis showed his first painting at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando when he was just 19. This was a big deal!

In 1825, when Luis was 23, he became a full member of the Academia. He was even called an "Academician of Merit," which meant he was a very talented artist.

Important Artworks and Royal Commissions

Thanks to his family's influence, Luis received special painting jobs from the royal family. Queen Consort Maria Josepha asked him to paint "Presentation of Mary" for a church. He also painted beautiful pictures on the ceilings of the Royal Palace. These paintings showed ideas like "Public Virtues" and the Roman goddess Juno.

Luis López Piquer also painted many religious artworks for churches. He worked on paintings for a church in Castromocho. He also worked with his brother Bernardo on art for Orihuela Cathedral.

Studying Abroad and Moving to Paris

Around 1830, King Ferdinand gave Luis money to study art in Rome, Italy. This was a great chance to learn from the masters! However, he had to return to Spain in 1833 when the King died and his money stopped.

After the King's death, there was a time of political changes in Spain. Luis first supported a group called the Carlists. But as the political situation changed, he moved to Paris, France. He lived there for 14 years with his French wife. In 1842, he had his first art show in Paris. Later, he also showed his art in Madrid. In 1843, he displayed a portrait of Francis of Assisi.

Later Career and Famous Works

In 1858, the Senate (a part of the Spanish government) asked Luis to paint a very important picture. This painting was called "La Coronación de Quintana." It showed the famous poet Manuel José Quintana receiving a special laurel crown. This painting is still in the Senate Palace today and is one of Luis López Piquer's most famous works.

Luis also regularly showed his art at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. This big art show started in 1856, and he was a part of it from the very beginning.
