History of Castromocho
Castromocho has a long history, going all the way back to Roman times. People have found old Roman coins and other items in the area. This shows that people lived here many centuries ago.
After the Arabs left the kingdoms of Castile and León, Castromocho began to grow. It really started to become a town after the 10th century. However, it was officially founded as a town much later, in the late 15th century.
Important Buildings and Art
Castromocho is home to some interesting old buildings. There is a ruined fort or castle that you can still see today.
St. Stephen Church
The St. Stephen church was built in the 16th century. It has been updated recently, but it still shows its old style. The church has two beautiful fronts built in the Renaissance style.
Santa Maria Church
The other main church is called Iglesia Santa Maria, which means St. Mary Church. This church is special because of its amazing tower. The tower has a steeple with shiny, glazed tiles. These tiles have also been restored recently.
Inside the Santa Maria Church, you can find a very important sculpture. It is a statue of Our Lady of the Angels, also known as the "Queen of the Angels." This beautiful artwork is thought to be made by a famous Baroque sculptor named Lucia Ignacia Roldán.
