Luis María Linde de Castro (born May 15, 1945) is a Spanish economist and civil servant. An economist studies how money and resources work. A civil servant works for the government. Luis María Linde was the head of Spain's central bank, the Bank of Spain, from 2012 to 2018.

Early Life and Education

Luis María Linde was born in Madrid, Spain. He went to the Complutense University of Madrid. He studied economic sciences, which is about how economies work. He finished his studies with excellent grades.

Career Highlights

Linde started his career working for the Spanish government. He was a trade expert at the Spanish embassy in the Soviet Union. This means he helped with business deals between Spain and the Soviet Union. He also worked for the government department that handles Spain's money and economy.

In 1983, he began working at the Bank of Spain. This is Spain's main bank. It helps manage the country's money. From 2005 to 2008, he worked for the Inter-American Development Bank. This bank helps countries in North and South America develop.

On May 25, 2012, Luis María Linde joined the main decision-making group of the Bank of Spain. A few days later, the head of the bank, Miguel Ángel Fernández Ordóñez, left his job. Luis María Linde was then chosen to be the new Governor. He took on this big role during a difficult time for Spain's banks.

The rules for the Bank of Spain said that the Governor had to retire at age 70. This meant Luis María Linde could not finish a full six-year term. However, the government later changed this rule. This change allowed future Governors to serve their full term, even if they turned 70.
