About Luis Mariano
Luis Mariano was born in Irun, Spain, on August 13, 1914. His father worked as a mechanic and taxi driver. From a young age, Luis showed a strong interest in singing.
When the Spanish Civil War began, his family moved to France. They settled in a city called Bordeaux. There, Luis studied music at the Conservatoire, which is a special school for music. He also sang in small clubs called cabarets to earn money.
A woman named Jeanne Lagiscarde, who worked at a record store, saw his talent. She decided to help him with his singing career in Paris. To support himself, Luis sang in stage shows and started appearing in films. His first movie was 'L'escalier sans fin' in 1943.
In the same year, he tried out for a role in an opera called Don Pasquale. He sang in this opera at the Palais de Chaillot and later at the Théâtre des Variétés. He also made many recordings of popular songs and operettas, which are like light operas with singing and speaking.
His Career in Film
Luis Mariano continued to act in many films starting from 1946. He had a singing role in the movie Napoléon (1955). He also appeared in a film version of an operetta called Der Zarewitsch.
People described Luis Mariano as a "svelte singing idol" of French operetta. This means he was a very popular and stylish singer on stage and in movies after World War II.
Luis Mariano passed away in Paris in 1970.
His Lasting Influence
Luis Mariano's music is still remembered today. It was used a lot in a Belgian film from 1996 called Le huitième jour. In this movie, an actor named Laszlo Harmati played Luis Mariano in some dream-like scenes.
