Luis Ángel "Canena" Márquez Sánchez (born October 28, 1925 – died March 1, 1988) was a professional baseball player. He was from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Luis Márquez was a talented Outfielder. He made history as the third Puerto Rican player to join Major League Baseball (MLB).
Márquez played in 68 games in the major leagues. He played for the Boston Braves, the Chicago Cubs, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His last game was on July 11, 1954.

Early Career in Baseball
Before playing in MLB, Luis Márquez played in the Negro leagues. He was part of teams like the New York Black Yankees, Baltimore Elite Giants, and Homestead Grays. In 1949, he became the first Black player to sign with the New York Yankees.
Puerto Rico's Winter League Star
Márquez played for 20 seasons in Puerto Rico's winter league. He was an amazing player there. A baseball historian, Thomas Van Hyning, called him a "complete ballplayer." This means he could hit, run, throw, and play defense very well.
Luis Márquez holds many records in the Puerto Rico winter league. He is the all-time leader in hits with 1,206. He also leads in runs scored with 768. Plus, he has the most doubles with 235.
Minor League Journey
Márquez also spent 14 seasons playing in the minor leagues. He played for several teams. These included the Portland Beavers in the Pacific Coast League. He also played for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Toledo Sox, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Rangers. These teams were in the American Association.
Life After Playing
Luis Márquez stayed involved in baseball his whole life. He worked as a player, coach, and trainer. He even coached Little League teams. The municipal baseball stadium in Aguadilla is named after him. It is called Estadio Luis A. Canena Márquez.
Sadly, Luis Márquez passed away in 1988 in his hometown of Aguadilla.
