Luis Ortega Brú (born September 16, 1916 – died November 21, 1982) was a talented Spanish sculptor and carver. He was especially famous for creating beautiful Christian figures, like statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
Life of an Artist
Early Life and Training
Luis Ortega Brú was born in San Roque, Cádiz, a town in Spain. His father was a potter, which means he worked with clay. This inspired Luis from a very young age to create things with clay.
In 1931, when he was about 15 years old, Luis began studying sculpture. He went to the School of Arts and Crafts in Linea de la Concepcion. A few years later, in 1934, he also took drawing lessons from a teacher and poet named José Domingo de Mena.
Life was tough for Luis during the Spanish Civil War. He faced difficult times and sadly lost his parents. Later, in 1940, he spent some time in prison.
Becoming Famous
In 1944, Luis moved to Seville, a big city known for its art. He joined the School of Applied Arts there. In Seville, he started to become well-known in the art world. He held his first art show in 1949.
In 1952, Luis Ortega Brú won a very important prize. He received the Primer Premio Nacional de Escultura (National Award for Sculpture) for his artwork called "La Piedad," which means "Piety." This award showed how talented he was.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1955, Luis moved to Madrid to work as a master sculptor. He worked for a company called Talleres Arte de Granada. Later, he opened his own art workshop in Madrid.
In 1978, he returned to Seville and worked in the studio of Guzmán Bejarano. Luis Ortega Brú passed away in Seville in 1982.
Today, there is a museum in his hometown dedicated to his amazing artwork. Also, his local church, Santa María la Coronada Church, has one of his famous sculptures. It is called Most Holy Christ of the Happy Death.
