Luis Paret y Alcázar (born February 11, 1746 – died February 14, 1799) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his beautiful art from the 1700s, a time called the late Baroque or Rococo period.

His Life and Art

Luis Paret y Alcázar was born in Madrid, Spain. He started learning art from Antonio González Velázquez. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. There, he won important art prizes. He won a second prize in a painting contest in 1760. Then, he won first prize in 1766.

Later, he worked in the studio of a French painter named Charles de la Traverse. This painter worked for the French ambassador in Spain. When Luis Paret returned to Madrid, he became a teacher at the Royal Academy at age 33.

He often received special requests from the royal family. They asked him to paint and engrave views of ports. These were like detailed pictures of cities or harbors, similar to what was called vedute in other countries. He also painted plans for new buildings.

For some years, Luis Paret lived in Puerto Rico. While he was there, he taught art to another painter named Jose Campeche. Luis Paret also painted pictures of flowers, which are called still life paintings. He created genre paintings too. These paintings showed everyday life, especially the customs of ordinary people. These were sometimes called bambochadas.
