Luis Suárez Fernández (born June 25, 1924, died December 15, 2024) was an important Spanish historian. He first studied the Middle Ages, but later also wrote about more recent history. He was known for his views that supported Francoism, a political system in Spain at the time.

Early Life and Education

Luis Suárez Fernández was born in Gijón, a city in Spain. He went to college at the University of Oviedo and the University of Valladolid. He studied philosophy and literature.

He earned his highest degree, a doctorate in history, on June 16, 1947. He received this degree from the University of Madrid.

A Career in History

In 1955, Suárez Fernández became a professor at the University of Valladolid. He taught about ancient and medieval history, as well as general cultural history. He became a very important person at the university.

He was the dean of the university in 1963. Then, in 1965, he became the rector, which is like being the president of the university. While he was rector, he started the first special program for studying theatre at the university.

In 1972, the Spanish government made him the Director General of Universities and Investigation. This meant he was in charge of universities and research across the country.

Later Academic Roles

In 1975, Suárez Fernández became a professor of medieval history. This was at the new Autonomous University of Madrid. In the same year, he became the director of a Spanish cultural society in Rome. This society was called the Escuela Española en Roma de Arqueología e Historia.

He had been in charge of medieval studies there since 1956. He was the overall director until 1978. Even after retiring, he remained a respected professor of medieval history at the Autonomous University.

Political Views and Recognition

Luis Suárez Fernández held political views that were aligned with the right-wing. He had connections with the Fundación Francisco Franco. This foundation supported the ideas of Francisco Franco, who was a leader in Spain.

Suárez Fernández also led the Hermandad del Valle de los Caídos. This was a group connected to a famous monument in Spain. He also wrote about Francisco Franco for a Spanish biography dictionary.

He was a dedicated Catholic and a member of Opus Dei, a Catholic organization.

On May 7, 1993, he was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia de la Historia. This is a very important historical academy in Spain. He officially joined on January 23, 1994. He lived to be 100 years old, passing away on December 15, 2024.
