A Career in Public Service

Luis Téllez joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1980. This is a major political party in Mexico. He led the Institute for Economic, Social and Political Studies (IEPES) within the party.

Key Government Roles

He started working in the federal government during the time of President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. He was an Undersecretary of Planning at the Secretariat of Agriculture. This role involved planning for farming and forestry. During this time, he wrote a book about modernizing these sectors. The book explained the government's goals for agriculture from 1988 to 1994.

Later, he worked for President Ernesto Zedillo. He led the Office of the Presidency. From 1997 to 2000, he served as the Secretary of Energy. This meant he was in charge of Mexico's energy policies. He is also part of the advisory board for the Mexico Institute.
