Luis de Mendoza (died April 2, 1520) was a Spanish sailor and explorer. He was part of Magellan's circumnavigation of the world. This was a very important journey to sail all the way around the Earth. Mendoza was the first captain of the ship called the Victoria.

Who Was Luis de Mendoza?

Luis de Mendoza was chosen by Charles I of Spain on March 30, 1519. He was made the treasurer of the navy. This meant he was in charge of the money and supplies for the ships. Their big goal was to find a new way to the Spice Islands. These islands were famous for valuable spices like cloves and nutmeg.

Why Were the Spice Islands Important?

The Spice Islands were very important because spices were worth a lot of money in Europe. They were used for cooking, medicine, and even to preserve food. Finding a direct sea route to these islands was a huge deal. It meant countries could get spices without going through many middlemen.

The Treaty of Tordesillas: Dividing the World

Spain and Portugal were both powerful countries exploring the world. To avoid fighting over new lands, they signed the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. This treaty drew an imaginary line down the Atlantic Ocean. It divided the world into two parts. Spain could claim lands to the west of the line, and Portugal could claim lands to the east. Magellan's journey aimed to find a route to the Spice Islands that was within Spain's part of the world.
