Luis de Sandoval y Zapata was a writer from New Spain, which is now Mexico. He was born sometime between 1618 and 1629. He passed away in Mexico City in 1671. Many people thought he was a very famous author during his time. However, over the years, his works were mostly forgotten in Mexican literature.

About His Life

Luis de Sandoval y Zapata's parents were Jerónimo Sandoval y Zapata and Bernardina de Porras. He went to school at the Old San Ildefonso College. There, he became very interested in religious subjects. Later, he married Teresa de Villanueva. They had four children together.

What He Wrote

Most of Luis de Sandoval y Zapata's writings have been lost over time. But some of his work has been found again. From these recovered pieces, we know he wrote in a baroque style. This means his writing was often very detailed and complex. He wrote about literature and ideas about life.

His most famous writing was a sonnet, which is a type of poem, dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. This poem was published by a priest named Florencia. Later, Antonio Mendoza printed it again in 1725.

Sandoval also wrote a piece called Panegírico a la paciencia. This was published in 1645. He also wrote a few comedies, which are plays meant to be funny. A researcher named Alfonso Plancarte found 29 more sonnets written by him.

In 1986, José Pascual Buxó put together and published Sandoval's works. These writings show the ideas and smartness of the Creole people. They were people born in the Americas but of European background. His works also show that he knew a lot about European writing and events.

Some of Sandoval's works were about the Immaculate Conception. These writings even won awards in a contest at the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico. He also wrote other poems like sonnets, octaves, and a long poem called Relación fúnebre a la infeliz, trágica muerte de dos caballeros.... This poem describes a plot by Martín Cortés (son of Hernán Cortés) and the Ávila brothers. These men were also Creoles and sons of conquistadors.
