Luisa Bay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Luisa Bay is a small bay found on the northern coast of South Georgia Island. It's located between Cape Vakop and Mount Skittle. This bay is an important part of the island's history, especially regarding the early days of whaling.

Where is Luisa Bay?

Luisa Bay is in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is on the north side of South Georgia Island. This island is a British overseas territory. The bay is a natural inlet of the sea. It is surrounded by land on three sides.

How Luisa Bay Got Its Name

Luisa Bay was explored and mapped by a group called the South Georgia Survey. This happened between 1951 and 1952. The bay was later named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee. They named it after a ship called the Luisa.

The Ship Luisa

The Luisa was a ship that belonged to an Argentine whaling company. This company was called the Compañía Argentina de Pesca. In 1904, the Luisa helped to set up the very first permanent whaling station on South Georgia. This station was at a place called Grytviken. Today, the Luisa is no longer a working ship. It is an old, broken ship that is now just a wreck. It lies in King Edward Cove, which is another bay nearby.
