Hound Bay facts for kids
Hound Bay is a bay located at the bottom of the Barff Peninsula. Its Norwegian name is Bikjebugten. It's about 2.5 miles (4 km) wide at its entrance and stretches back about 3 miles (5 km). You can find it on the north coast of South Georgia, between Tijuca Point and Cape Vakop.
This bay has also been called "George Bay" or "Hundebugten" on old maps. During a survey in 1951-52, people learned that whalers and sealers often called it "Bikjebugten." This Norwegian word means something like "Dog Bay," referring to a low type of dog. Later, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee suggested the name Hound Bay, which is the English version of Bikjebugten.
Places Around Hound Bay
Rolf Rock
Rolf Rock is a small, lonely rock located in Hound Bay. It is about 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) south-southeast of Tijuca Point. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after the Rolf. The Rolf was a ship that helped set up the first permanent whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia, in 1904. This naming followed mapping done by the South Georgia Survey in 1951–52.
Lönnberg Valley
Lönnberg Valley is a valley that is not covered in ice. It stretches southwest from the base of Hound Bay towards the Nordenskjöld Glacier, which is further inland. The South Georgia Survey explored this valley between 1951 and 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after Professor Einar Lönnberg, who was a Swedish zoologist.
Cape Vakop
Cape Vakop is a headland located between Hound Bay and Luisa Bay. It was first mapped by the Second German Antarctic Expedition in 1911–12, led by Wilhelm Filchner. The name "Cape Vakop" appeared on a map based on surveys of South Georgia done between 1926 and 1930. These surveys were carried out by people from the Discovery Investigations. However, the name might have been used even earlier.
History of Hound Bay
Hound Bay played a small part in the Falklands War. On April 21, 1982, a special British military group called the Special Boat Service landed on Hound Bay beach. They arrived by helicopters from the ship HMS Endurance. They tried to cross to the Argentine positions by going through Sörling Valley and into Cumberland East Bay. However, heavy snow and ice forced them to turn back between April 22 and 24.
