Luiz Paulo Fernández Conde (born August 6, 1934 – died July 21, 2015) was a Brazilian architect and a well-known politician. He served as the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro from 1997 to 2001. Later, he became the Vice Governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro from 2003 to 2007.
About Luiz Paulo Conde
Luiz Paulo Conde was the fourth son of Jose Ramon Conde Rivas and Amália Lorenzo Fernández. His father was a Spanish businessman. His mother was a singer and musician with Spanish roots. Luiz Paulo was also the nephew of the famous composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernández.
He went to Lafayette and Mello e Souza High Schools when he was young. In 1959, he married Eliza Rizzo. She was also an architect and an artist. Together, they had three children: Marcelo, Marcos, and Maria Eliza.
His Career as an Architect
Luiz Paulo Conde finished his architecture studies in 1959. He graduated from the National Architecture School of the University of Brazil. This school is now known as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
He helped design the Rio Museum of Modern Art (MAM). He worked with a famous architect named Affonso Eduardo Reidy on this project.
Later, the French government invited Conde to be a judge. He helped choose the design for a new museum in Paris, the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. He reviewed plans from well-known architects like Christian de Portzamparc and Norman Foster.
In 1994, a book called "Luiz Paulo Conde: Um Arquiteto Carioca" was released. This book celebrated his architectural work.
His Political Journey
Luiz Paulo Conde held many important jobs in government. He started as the Municipal Secretary of Urbanism. This was during the first term of Cesar Maia (1993–1997). This role meant he helped plan how the city of Rio de Janeiro would grow.
He also worked as the State Secretary of Government Articulation. This was under Governor Anthony Garotinho (1999–2002). Later, he became the State Secretary of Environment and Urban Development. This was when Rosinha Garotinho was Governor (2003–2007). He also served as the State Secretary of Culture for Sérgio Cabral.
From 2007 to 2008, he was the president of Furnas. This is a large energy company in Brazil.
His Passing
Luiz Paulo Conde passed away on July 21, 2015. He was 80 years old. He had been in the Samaritano Hospital in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, for almost a year. His body was buried at the São João Batista Cemetery.
