Luiza Erundina de Sousa (born November 30, 1934) is a Brazilian politician. She was born in Uiraúna, a small city in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. She has held many important roles in government, including being the mayor of São Paulo.

Luiza Erundina's Political Journey

Luiza Erundina started her political career in 1980. She first joined the PT (Workers’ Party). She was a member of this party until 1997.

Changing Political Parties

In 1997, Luiza Erundina decided to join a different group, the PSB. Later, in March 2016, she changed parties again. This time, she joined the PSOL. She made this change because she had different ideas from the PSB party.

Her Roles in Government

Luiza Erundina has served in several important government positions.

  • From 1983 to 1987, she was a city councilor in São Paulo. This means she helped make decisions for the city.
  • From 1987 to 1988, she was a state deputy for the state of São Paulo. In this role, she helped create laws for the entire state.
  • She became the mayor of São Paulo from 1989 to 1992. As mayor, she was the main leader of the city government.
  • Since 1999, she has been a federal deputy from São Paulo. She has been re-elected many times, in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. As a federal deputy, she helps make laws for all of Brazil.

Running for Vice Mayor

In the 2020 São Paulo mayoral election, Luiza Erundina ran for vice mayor. She was the running mate for Guilherme Boulos, who was also from the PSOL party.

She earned a Bachelor's degree in Social Service from the Federal University of Paraíba. A social worker helps people and communities improve their lives.
