Luleå Cathedral (which is Luleå domkyrka in Swedish) is a very important church in Luleå, Sweden. It serves as the main church for the Diocese of Luleå. It is also the local church for the Luleå Cathedral Parish, which is part of the Church of Sweden.
History of Luleå Cathedral
There have been two churches built on the same spot where the current cathedral stands today.
- In 1667, the first church, which was made of wood, was taken down.
- A new church, built from stone, was then constructed in its place.
- Sadly, on June 11, 1887, this stone church was completely destroyed by fire.
Just two years later, the church leaders decided to rebuild. On June 11, 1889, the first stone for the new church was laid. The famous architect Adolf Emil Melander designed the building. The church was officially opened and blessed on December 3, 1893. This day was also the First Advent Sunday that year.
The church was first named Oscar Fredrik Church. It was named after King Oscar II of Sweden. In 1904, the Diocese of Luleå was created. This meant the church became a cathedral, which is the main church of a diocese.
The Grand Organ
The large organ inside Luleå Cathedral is a very impressive musical instrument. It was first used in 1987. The organ was built by Grönlund organ builders, located in Gammelstaden.
This amazing organ is very heavy, weighing 25 tons. It has a total of 4,595 pipes! In 2010, the organ was made even bigger. Special parts called "En chamade" were added. These parts are inspired by French organ designs and make the sound even more powerful. The way the organ looks, its facade, was designed by Jan Boström. He worked together with the architect Bertil Fraklin.
