Lumen Eclipse facts for kids
Lumen Eclipse is a special kind of art gallery in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. It's a public space where you can see amazing digital art. The goal is to show art from local and international artists to everyone.
You can find Lumen Eclipse on two big screens. These screens are on the Tourism Information Kiosk. It's right near the Harvard Square MBTA train stop. They show different motion art pieces every day. You can also see their art online on the Lumen Eclipse website.
About Lumen Eclipse
Lumen Eclipse shows modern art that moves. They use outdoor video screens, fun social places, and the internet. The gallery first opened on November 1, 2005, in Harvard Square.
Each month, Lumen Eclipse displays about eight new art pieces. Since 2005, they have shown art from over 300 different artists. Some famous artists who have shown their work include Yoko Ono, Michel Gondry, and Miranda July.
Lumen Eclipse also holds special monthly events. These events are called "Le Peek." They are smaller gatherings where artists and people who love art can talk. These screenings happen at different social spots in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Interesting Facts
- In late 2005, a curator named Ryan Hovenweep asked for art ideas. He wanted pieces for the December 2005 and January 2006 shows. Two digital art pieces were chosen for the December show. These were "Tenderly Yours" by Peter Horvath and "re_collection" by Michael Takeo Magruder. A newspaper called the Boston Globe even wrote about the December show. Another digital art piece, "Tap Evol" by Victor Liu, was in the January 2006 show. These were some of the first times that online art was shown as video art in Cambridge.
- The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City helped Lumen Eclipse. They were the first guest curators for the gallery in February 2006.
- Lumen Eclipse sometimes asks artists to create new art. These new pieces are often about life in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- In June 2006, the gallery showed its first interactive art piece. This means people could interact with the art. It was created by Nell Breyer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- Lumen Eclipse also hosts a yearly film festival. It's called "Le:60" and features 1-minute films. This festival takes place on Palmer Street in Harvard Square.
