Lumley Thelwall became a captain in the Parliamentary army. This was during the English Civil War, a big conflict in England in the 1600s. The Parliamentary army, also known as the Roundheads, fought against the King's army.
A Difficult Journey
In April 1649, Captain Thelwall and his soldiers were sent to Ireland. During their journey, his troop faced a challenging situation. In June 1649, while in Shropshire, local people caused trouble for his soldiers. They took their weapons and supplies.
Later, in September 1650, the Council of State (a powerful government group) suggested Lumley Thelwall for an important job in Ireland. He was recommended to be the "Sword Bearer," a ceremonial role in government.
Political Career
In 1656, Lumley Thelwall was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Denbighshire. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in Parliament. He served in the Second Protectorate Parliament. This was a special Parliament that met during a time when England was not ruled by a king. He took the place of John Jones, who chose to represent a different area.
