Lumos is a global charity that helps children. It was started by J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. Lumos works to make sure children can grow up in loving families, not in large institutions like orphanages.
How Lumos Started
Lumos began in 2005. J. K. Rowling learned about children with disabilities living in difficult conditions in institutions. She wanted to help these children. So, she teamed up with Emma Nicholson, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne to create a charity.
The charity was first called the Children's High Level Group (CHLG). Later, in 2010, it changed its name to Lumos. This name comes from a spell in Harry Potter that creates light. It represents the charity's goal to bring hope and light to children's lives. J. K. Rowling stopped being a trustee in 2013, but she is still the charity's president.
Lumos has worked with other groups to change rules about money. They encouraged the European Commission to make sure that funding for countries in the European Union is used to help children live in communities, not in large institutions. Because of this work, a lot of money has been used to support families and community services instead of building or fixing institutions.
Who Leads Lumos
Lumos is run by a team of people who care about children. The charity has a Board of Trustees that guides its work.
Howard Taylor became the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lumos in November 2024. He leads the daily operations of the charity.
Ken Towle is the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Other people on the board help make important decisions for Lumos. There is also a separate board for Lumos Foundation USA.
