Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Luzzasco Luzzaschi (born around 1545 – died September 10, 1607) was an Italian composer, organist, and teacher. He lived during the late Renaissance period. Luzzaschi was born and died in Ferrara, Italy. He spent most of his life there. He was known for his skill in writing madrigals. Other famous madrigal composers included Palestrina and Gesualdo.

Luzzaschi's Life and Music

Luzzaschi learned music from Cipriano de Rore. He became a very important teacher himself. Many musicians from Rome and Naples studied his work. Some even came to Ferrara to learn directly from him.

In 1564, Luzzaschi became the main organist for the d'Este royal family. He was an amazing keyboard player. He was especially good at playing a unique instrument called the archicembalo. This instrument could play very small musical steps.

Luzzaschi is famous for working with the Concerto delle donne. This was a special group of female singers. Alfonso II, the Duke of Ferrara, started this group. Luzzaschi was their director. He wrote difficult madrigals for them. These songs needed great singing skill.

In 1601, he published a famous collection of songs. It was called Madrigali...per cantare, et sonare, a uno, e doi, e tre soprani. These were some of the songs performed by the Concerto delle donne.

What Music Did Luzzaschi Write?

Not all of Luzzaschi's music has survived. We know of:

  • Seven books of madrigals for five voices (from 1571 to 1604).
  • The 1601 Madrigali per cantare et sonare a 1-3 soprani.
  • A collection of motets (religious songs) for five voices.
  • Four pieces for keyboard instruments.

He also wrote three books of ricercars (instrumental pieces) for four voices. However, these books are now lost.

  • Il primo libro de madrigali a cinque voci (1571)
