Lyda Roberti was a talented American singer and actress who performed on stage and in movies. She was born Lyda Pecjak on May 20, 1906, and sadly passed away on March 12, 1938.

Her Early Life

Lyda Roberti was born in Warsaw, which was part of Russia at the time. Her father was a professional clown, and her mother was Polish. When Lyda was a child, she performed in the circus. She was a trapeze artist and also rode horses without a saddle. She had an older brother named Robert and a younger sister named Manya.

After the Communist revolution in Russia in 1917, Lyda's family moved to Shanghai, China. There, Lyda worked as a dancer in a café to earn money. She saved enough money to travel to the United States. In the U.S., she performed in vaudeville shows in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Her Acting and Singing Career

Lyda Roberti made her first big appearance on Broadway in 1931 in a show called You Said It. The show was a huge success, and Lyda became famous very quickly. People started calling her "Broadway's preferred Polish blonde." Many people loved her unique Polish accent, which sometimes made audiences laugh.

Just one year later, she signed a contract with Paramount Pictures. She appeared in the comedy film Million Dollar Legs in 1932. In 1933, she performed in two more Broadway musicals: Pardon My English and the very popular Roberta. Throughout the 1930s, Lyda starred in many films. In 1936, she even took over roles from another actress, Thelma Todd, after Todd passed away.

Her Personal Life and Health

On June 25, 1935, Lyda Roberti married an aviator named Bud Ernst in Yuma, Arizona. They separated for a short time but got back together in 1937. They stayed together until Lyda's death.

Lyda often had health problems, especially with her heart. In 1935, she had surgery for heart issues. In 1936, she had to leave a film called Wives Never Know because she was unwell. In 1937, she had several heart attacks, which meant she had to work less.

Her Final Years

On March 13, 1938, Lyda Roberti had a very serious heart attack. She was only 31 years old when she passed away, with her husband Bud Ernst by her side. Her funeral was attended by about 400 people, including many of her friends from Hollywood.

Lyda Roberti is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
