Early Life and Learning
Lydia Okumura was born in 1948 in the big city of São Paulo, Brazil. She loved art and decided to study it at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado. She finished her studies there in 1973.
In the 1970s, Lydia joined a group of artists in São Paulo called "Equipe3." An art collective is like a team of artists who work together. In 1973, this team showed their special artwork, Pontos de vista, at the São Paulo Art Biennial. A Bienal is a huge art show that happens every two years. Pontos de vista was a "site-specific" work, meaning it was made just for that exact place.
Around that time, Lydia moved to New York City in the United States. She continued her art studies at the Pratt Graphics Center. Since the 1970s, her art has been shown in many places around the world.
Where You Can See Her Art
Lydia Okumura's artworks are so important that they are kept in famous museums. These museums collect her pieces to share with everyone. Some of the places where her art is part of the collection include:

Amazing Art Shows
Lydia Okumura creates many different kinds of art. She makes drawings, paints on walls, and builds sculptures that play with space. Her art uses "geometric abstraction," which means she uses simple shapes like squares, triangles, and lines. She makes them look like they are moving or changing right before your eyes! This creates cool "spatial illusions."
Her very first solo art show in the United States was in 2016. It was held at the University at Buffalo. In 2019, she had another solo show at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in London.
In 2024, Lydia Okumura's art was part of a special show called Every Sound is a Shape of Time. This exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum Miami featured many artists. It showed how different artists use various materials to create art.
