Lydia Webb (born around 1736 or 1737, died 1793) was a famous English actress. She started her acting career in Norwich, England. Lydia was married twice, first to Mr. Day and later to Mr. Webb.
She had her first important performance on November 21, 1772. This was at the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh. She acted in a play called The West Indian. Lydia Webb passed away in 1793.
Lydia Webb's Acting Career
Lydia Webb was a very talented and active performer. She acted in more than 50 different plays during her career. As she got older, she often played more "grotesque characters." These were usually funny, unusual, or slightly strange roles.
She performed many different parts, including:
- Portia in The Merchant of Venice on November 29, 1773.
- Mrs. Peachum in The Beggar's Opera at the Covent Garden Theatre.
- Mrs. Honeycombe in Polly Honeycombe at the Haymarket Theatre.
- Glumdalca in Tom Thumb at the Covent Garden Theatre.
- The Queen in Hamlet.
- Emilia in Othello.
Lydia Webb performed in many other plays as well. In 1786, an artist named James Sayers created an illustration of her. This artwork is now kept at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
