Lyles is a small, quiet community in Hickman County, Tennessee, United States. It's known as a "census-designated place," which means it's an area the government tracks for population, but it's not an official city or town.

How Many People Live in Lyles?

The number of people living in Lyles has grown a little over the years.

  • In 2010, the population was 734 people.
  • By 2020, the population had increased to 763 people.

Where is Lyles Located?

Lyles is found along Tennessee State Route 100, a main road in the area.

This community has a few local stores and churches. It is also home to Camp Okawehna, a special camp for children.

A Look at Lyles' History

Lyles was originally called Lyell Station. The Lyell family, including William, John, and Robert Lyell, were very important in building this early settlement. Their ancestors, Robert Lyell and Deborah Lawrence Lyell, moved to Hickman County from Virginia before the year 1840.

Lyell Station was once served by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. This means trains used to stop here, connecting the community to other places. You can still see the old train tracks in Lyles on maps today, even though trains don't run on them anymore.

How Did Lyell Station Become Lyles?

It's not exactly clear when the name changed from Lyell Station to just Lyles. However, even today, some people with the last name Lyell still live in the community.

Many roads in Lyles are named after the early families who settled there. For example, Ed Lyell Road was named after Ed Lyell, who passed away in 1977. He was a descendant of the first Lyell settlers. Other roads like McGee Road, Tidwell Lane, and Bishop Road also honor these important founding families.

Nearby Communities

Lyles is surrounded by two other small communities in the East Hickman area: Wrigley and Bon Aqua. Bon Aqua is perhaps the most famous of the three because the legendary country music star Johnny Cash once lived there.
