History of Lyman
The town of Lyman started to grow in the mid-1870s. It began around a general store owned by a man named Augustus Belton Groce. Because of his store, the community was first known as Groce's Stop.
In 1923, the Groce family sold a large piece of land, over 700 acres, to a company called Pacific Mills. The very next year, in 1924, the Lyman Printing and Finishing Mill was built. By 1927, Pacific Mills had built 375 homes for its workers to live in.
The town was then given a new name, Lyman. This name was chosen to remember Arthur T. Lyman, who used to be the president of the mill. For many years, Lyman was a successful textile town, meaning its main industry was making cloth. However, by 2005, the last mill in Lyman closed down.
A historic building called McMakin's Tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it is an important place in history.
