Lyne Kirk facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lyne Kirk is a very old and important church in Scotland. It's located on a small hill next to the A72 road, about 4.5 miles west of Peebles. This historic church is in the Scottish Borders area and has a long history, dating back many centuries!

How Lyne Kirk Began

Lyne Kirk was first built in the 1100s, during the time of King William the Lion. Back then, it was a small chapel connected to a bigger church called Stobo Kirk. It was also looked after by the Bishop of Glasgow, who was an important church leader.

Later, in the 1300s, Lyne became its own parish, meaning it had its own area and community to serve. A historian named Hew Scott believed that Lyne was one of the very first places where Christianity started in the Peeblesshire area.

The Church's Later Years

Around the year 1600, Lyne Kirk was in bad shape and needed a lot of repairs. In 1644, the church was greatly fixed up and improved by John Hay, who was the 8th Lord Yester. Thanks to his work, the church became the beautiful building we see today.

Later, in 1889, another important person, Francis Charteris, the Earl of Wemyss, also did major renovation work on the church.

Inside, the church mostly looks like it did in the 1600s. It even has an old stone font that was used for baptisms before the Reformation. A new entrance porch was added in the 1800s.

The churchyard, which is the area around the church, has many interesting old gravestones. One of the most famous is the "Adam and Eve" gravestone from 1712. It shows a picture of Adam and Eve from the Bible story, being tempted to eat the forbidden fruit.

Lyne Kirk is open for people to visit and explore its long history.
