LYNE
Lyne Kirk

Lyne Kirk is a very old and important church in Scotland. It's part of the Church of Scotland. You can find it on a small hill next to the A72 main road. It's about 4.5 miles west of a town called Peebles. This area is now known as the Scottish Borders.

History of Lyne Kirk

Early Beginnings

Lyne Kirk was first built in the 1100s. This was during the time when William the Lion was king of Scotland. Back then, it was a small chapel connected to a nearby church called Stobo Kirk. The church was looked after by the Bishopric of Glasgow.

Later, in the 1300s, Lyne became its own parish. This meant it had its own area and church leaders. A historian named Hew Scott believed that Lyne was one of the first places where Christianity started in the Peebles area.

Church Leaders (1560-1682)

Here are some of the ministers who led Lyne Kirk after the Scottish Reformation:

  • Patrick Grinton (1560–1571)
  • Gilbert Hay (1575–1592)
  • John Ker (1593–1627)
  • Hew Ker (1627–1658) – He was John Ker's son.
  • Robert Brown (1659–1682)

Restoring the Church

Around the year 1600, Lyne Kirk was in bad shape and needed repairs. In 1644, a nobleman named John Hay, who was the 8th Lord Yester, paid for big renovations. These changes helped make the church the beautiful building you see today. John Hay later became the Earl of Tweeddale.

Much later, in 1889, another important person, Francis Charteris, the Earl of Wemyss, also helped with major repair work.

Inside the church, most of the features are from the 1600s. There is also an old font that is even older, from before the Reformation. A new porch was added to the church in the 1800s.

Special Gravestones

The churchyard, called the kirkyard, has many interesting gravestones. One famous one is the "Adam and Eve" gravestone from 1712. It shows the story of Adam and Eve being tempted by the devil to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge.

Today, Lyne Kirk is open for people to visit and explore its history.
