Lynn Morris Jones was born on January 1, 1953. He is an American former professional baseball player, coach, and manager. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. After his playing days, he became a coach for the Royals, Florida Marlins, and Boston Red Sox. He also worked as a manager in the minor leagues.

Lynn Jones: A Baseball Journey

Lynn Jones went to Thiel College in western Pennsylvania. There, he played baseball for the Tomcats team. In 1974, he set a school record by hitting an amazing .440 batting average. He was a talented athlete who also played basketball and soccer in college. In 1987, his college honored him by adding him to their athletic Hall of Fame.

Playing in the Big Leagues

Lynn Jones was first picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1974 draft. Later, the Detroit Tigers chose him in the 1978 Rule 5 draft.

In 1979, the Detroit Tigers named Jones their Rookie of the Year. He also played in 14 important post-season games with the Kansas City Royals from 1984 to 1985. During the 1985 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, he had two hits, including a double and a triple, in six games.

Over his eight seasons in Major League Baseball, Jones played in 527 games. He had a batting average of .252. He also hit seven home runs and had 91 RBI, which means he helped his teammates score 91 runs.

Coaching and Managing After Playing

After Lynn Jones stopped playing baseball, he became a manager in the minor leagues. He worked for teams connected to the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves. As a minor-league manager for nine seasons, he won 555 games and lost 630. He led his teams to the playoffs twice, in 1995 and 1997, with the Kane County Cougars.

Jones also coached in the major leagues. He was a first base coach for the Kansas City Royals in 1991 and 1992. In 2001, he coached for the Marlins, first at first base and then at third base. He also helped their outfielders and baserunners improve.

From 2004 to 2005, Jones coached first base for the Boston Red Sox. He missed some games in 2004 because of an eye injury that was not related to baseball. The Red Sox team in 2004 won the 2004 World Series. This was Lynn Jones' second time being part of a World Series championship team.

After working as a baserunning coach for the Braves' minor league teams, Jones returned to his old college. In 2013, he joined the coaching staff at Thiel College.
