Lynn Morris Jones was born on January 1, 1953. He is a former American baseball player, coach, and manager. Lynn played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. After playing, he became a coach for several teams. These included the Royals, Florida Marlins, and Boston Red Sox. He also managed teams in the minor leagues.

Lynn Jones: Early Life and College Sports

Lynn Jones went to Thiel College in western Pennsylvania. There, he played for the Tomcats baseball team. In 1974, he set a school record. He had an amazing batting average of .440 that season.

Lynn was a talented athlete in college. He played three different sports. Besides baseball, he also played basketball and soccer. In 1987, his college honored him. They put him into their athletic Hall of Fame.

Starting His Baseball Journey

The Cincinnati Reds first drafted Lynn Jones. This happened in the 10th round of the 1974 draft. Later, the Detroit Tigers chose him. This was in the 1978 Rule 5 draft. This draft allows teams to pick players from other teams' minor league rosters.

Playing in the Major Leagues

Lynn Jones became a professional baseball player. He was named the Detroit Tigers' Rookie of the Year in 1979. He played in the MLB for eight seasons. During his career, he played in 527 games. He had a batting average of .252. He also hit seven home runs and had 91 RBI (Runs Batted In).

Lynn also played in 14 important post-season games. These were with the Kansas City Royals in 1984 and 1985. In the 1985 World Series, he played six games. He got two hits, including a double and a triple. The Royals won the World Series that year!

After Playing: Coaching and Managing

After his playing career, Lynn Jones became a coach and manager. He managed teams in the minor leagues. He worked for the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves organizations. He led his teams to the postseason twice. This happened in 1995 and 1997.

Coaching in the Major Leagues

Lynn also coached in the Major Leagues. He was a first base coach for the Kansas City Royals in 1991 and 1992. In 2001, he coached for the Florida Marlins. He coached first base and then third base. He also helped the outfielders and baserunners.

From 2004 to 2005, Lynn coached for the Boston Red Sox. He was their first base coach. In 2004, the Red Sox won the World Series. This was Lynn's second championship team! He had to miss some games that year due to an eye injury.

After coaching in the pros, Lynn returned to his old college. In 2013, he joined the coaching staff at Thiel College.
