In 1985, he and his wife moved to Wichita, Kansas. There, he took a marketing job with the Farm Credit Bank of Wichita. Later, in 1993, Rogers became a vice president at CoBank Farm Credit Leasing. He stayed there until he was elected to the Kansas Senate in 2016.

Helping Wichita Schools
In the 1990s, Rogers was very active in his children's school. He was part of a Parent-teacher organization (PTO). He also helped raise money for the Wichita Public Schools. This included a big fundraising effort in 2000.
His first elected job was on the Wichita School Board. He served on the board from 2001 to 2018. During this time, he changed his political party. He switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party. He said he was frustrated with Republicans who seemed to reduce support for public schools.
Serving in the Kansas Senate
In 2016, Rogers was elected to the Kansas Senate. He represented the 25th district in west Wichita. He took over the seat from Republican Senator Michael O'Donnell.
As a senator, Rogers worked to change tax policies. He wanted to invest more money in schools. His main focus areas were education, farming, and banking issues. While in the Senate, Senator Laura Kelly sat next to him. She became an important mentor to him.
