David Toland grew up in Iola, Kansas. His family has lived in Kansas for many generations. He went to the University of Kansas. There, he earned two degrees. He studied political science and public administration.

Kansas Secretary of Commerce
In 2019, Governor Laura Kelly chose David Toland for a big job. She appointed him as the Kansas Secretary of Commerce. This happened after she became governor. The Kansas Senate approved his appointment. He received support from both major political parties.
As Secretary of Commerce, David Toland has done many things. He helped bring back the state's International Division. This division helps Kansas businesses work with other countries.
