History of Park City
The first Park City was started way back in 1870. It was about 14 miles (23 km) northwest of Wichita. This early town tried to become the main county town but didn't succeed. When the railroad went to Wichita instead, the first Park City slowly disappeared. Its buildings were even moved to other towns like Wichita, Newton, and Hutchinson.
How the Current Park City Started
The Park City we know today began in 1953. It started as the Park City Improvement District. This area grew from a small piece of farmland into a community covering about 3,321 acres (13.44 km2).
On November 26, 1980, Park City officially became a "third class city." This means it became a recognized city with its own local government. The new city held a special election on February 17, 1981. In this election, Raymond J. Reiss was chosen as the first mayor. Five council members were also elected to help run the city.
Local News and Developments
Park City had its own newspaper called The Park City Newsdropper. It was published for about a year in 1980. The person who published it was Jerrie Molina, who was also the city's first City Clerk.
In March 2009, a large building called Hartman Arena opened. It was built by a local developer named Wink Hartman. This arena is a place where sports teams play. It has been home to the Wichita Wings indoor soccer team and the Wichita Regulators arena football team.
More recently, in 2021, a big Amazon building was constructed. It's a huge fulfillment center, about 1 million square feet (92,903 m2) in size. This center helps Amazon deliver packages to people.
