According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.20 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.
Lytton was named for the English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The post office was established January 10, 1900.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 315 people, 135 households, and 78 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,575.0 inhabitants per square mile (608.1/km2). There were 147 housing units at an average density of 735.0 per square mile (283.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.0% White, 0.3% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 135 households of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.2% were non-families. 34.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
