Lyudvig Alekseyevich Chibirov was an important leader in South Ossetia. He was born on November 19, 1932. He first served as the Chairman of the Parliament. Later, he became the very first president of South Ossetia. He held this top leadership role from 1996 to 2001.

Who Was Lyudvig Chibirov?
Lyudvig Chibirov was born in Tskhinvali, which is in what was then the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast. Before becoming president, he was a member of the Parliament of South Ossetia. From 1993, he was the head of state for South Ossetia.
Becoming President
The role of Chairman of the Parliament was changed to the role of President. Lyudvig Chibirov was the first person to hold this new presidential office. This happened after the first presidential elections in 1996.
Presidential Elections
In the 1996 elections, Lyudvig Chibirov won with 65% of the votes. His main opponent was Vladislav Gabaraev. Gabaraev wanted South Ossetia to separate from Georgia and join North Ossetia in Russia. He received about 20% of the votes. The president of Georgia at the time, Eduard Shevardnadze, said these elections were not legal.
The 2001 Election
In the next elections in 2001, Lyudvig Chibirov, who was 69 years old, received less than 20% of the votes. Stanislav Kochiev came in second place with 25%. The winner was Eduard Kokoity, who was 38 years old. He won with more than 48% of the votes. After this election, Eduard Kokoity became the new president.
