Lê Khả Phiêu (born December 27, 1931 – died August 7, 2020) was an important Vietnamese politician. He served as the top leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This role is called the General Secretary. He held this position from December 1997 to April 2001.

Lê Khả Phiêu's Early Life and Military Service
Lê Khả Phiêu was born in Thanh Hóa Province. He joined the People's Army of Vietnam when he was young. He fought in two major conflicts. These were the First Indochina War and the Vietnam War. He also took part in the Cambodian war. Later, he became the Head of the General Political Department for the Vietnam People's Army.
Lê Khả Phiêu's Political Career
Lê Khả Phiêu was seen by some as a leader who liked to keep things traditional. However, some historians disagree with this idea. For example, Martin Gainsborough noted that Lê Khả Phiêu spoke openly about problems within the Party. This happened before the Tenth National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Criticism of Party Control
Lê Khả Phiêu criticized what he called the 'illness of partyization'. This meant that the Party controlled too many things. He believed this was a problem. He was a close follower and student of the previous leader, Đỗ Mười. Lê Khả Phiêu became a member of the Politburo in the early 1990s. The Politburo is a very important group of leaders.
Lê Khả Phiêu's Death
Lê Khả Phiêu passed away on August 7, 2020. He died in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. He was 88 years old.
