Nông Đức Mạnh (born 11 September 1940) is a Vietnamese politician. He was the top leader of Vietnam, serving as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This is the most powerful position in the country. He held this role from 22 April 2001 to 19 January 2011.
Nông Đức Mạnh was born in Cường Lợi, Na Rì District, Bắc Kạn Province. His parents were farmers from the Tày ethnic group. He is the father of Nông Quốc Tuấn, who is also a political leader.

Early Life and Family Background
Nông Đức Mạnh's official records state he was born on 11 September 1940. He came from a farming family belonging to the Tày ethnic group. His father was named Nông Văn Lại and his mother was Hoàng Thị Nhị.
There have been rumors that Nông Đức Mạnh was the son of Hồ Chí Minh (1890–1969), a very important leader in Vietnamese history. When asked about this rumor, Nông Đức Mạnh famously replied, "All Vietnamese people are the children of Uncle Hồ." He later denied the rumor directly, confirming his parents were Nông Văn Lại and Hoàng Thị Nhị.
Education and Start in Politics
Nông Đức Mạnh attended the Hanoi Higher School from 1958 to 1961. After that, he worked as a forestry technician. He joined the Communist Party on 5 July 1963.
He continued his education by learning Russian at the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. He then traveled to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in Russia. There, he studied at the Forestry Institute until 1971. When he returned to Vietnam, he worked in the forestry service.
Rising Through the Ranks
Nông Đức Mạnh continued to advance in his career. He became the director of a state forestry camp. He also studied at the Nguyễn Ái Quốc High-Level Party School. From 1976 to 1980, he served as a deputy director in the provincial forestry service.
He became a member of the Bắc Thái Provincial Party Committee. In 1984, he was named deputy secretary of this committee. By November 1986, he became the secretary. He was elected as an alternate member of the Central Committee at the 6th National Congress. He later became a full member of the Central Committee.
Since 1991, Nông Đức Mạnh has been a member of the politburo. From 23 September 1992, he served as the Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam. He was one of the youngest people to hold this important position.
Leader of Vietnam
In April 2001, Nông Đức Mạnh was chosen as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This made him the most powerful leader in the country. His term was extended in April 2006.
He retired from his position on 19 January 2011. This happened after the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Nông Đức Mạnh was the first Vietnamese party head to have a university degree. He had a vision for Vietnam's future. He announced plans for Vietnam to become an industrialised country by the year 2020.
