Nông Đức Mạnh (born 11 September 1940) is a Vietnamese politician. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This was the most important leadership role in Vietnam. He held this position from April 2001 to January 2011.
Nông Đức Mạnh was born in Cường Lợi, Na Rì District, Bắc Kạn Province. His parents were farmers from the Tày ethnic group. His son, Nông Quốc Tuấn, is also a political leader in Vietnam.

Nông Đức Mạnh's official records state he was born on September 11, 1940. He came from a farming family belonging to the Tày ethnic group.
When asked about his family, Nông Đức Mạnh once said, "All Vietnamese people are the children of Uncle Hồ." This showed a sense of unity and national pride. He later confirmed his parents were Nông Văn Lại and Hoàng Thị Nhị.
Early Life and Political Journey
Nông Đức Mạnh began his education at the Hanoi Higher School from 1958 to 1961. After that, he worked as a forestry technician in Bắc Kạn.
He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in July 1963. From 1963 to 1965, he was a deputy chief in a wood exploitation team. He then studied Russian at the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. Later, he went to Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in Russia. There, he studied at the Forestry Institute until 1971.
After returning to Vietnam, he continued his work in forestry. He became the deputy head of the Bắc Thái provincial forestry inspection board.

From 1973 to 1974, Nông Đức Mạnh was the director of a state forestry camp. He also attended the Nguyễn Ái Quốc High-Level Party School. He steadily moved up in the Communist Party. He became a member of the Bắc Thái Provincial Party Committee. By 1986, he was the secretary of that committee.
He was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. In 1991, he joined the politburo, which is a very important group of leaders. From September 1992, he served as the Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam. He was one of the youngest people to hold this important position.
Nông Đức Mạnh was chosen as the General Secretary of the Communist Party in April 2001. He continued in this role until he retired on January 19, 2011. He was the first Vietnamese party leader to have a university degree. He had a vision for Vietnam to become an industrialized country by 2020.
