The village is spread out, with homes on both sides of the main road that connects Arrecife, Yaiza, and Playa Blanca. Mácher is also very near popular tourist spots like Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. Puerto del Carmen is only about 2 miles away.
In the past, people in Mácher mostly grew vegetables like tomatoes and onions. Onions were grown north of the road, and tomatoes to the south. Today, most people in Mácher work in tourism or other services, helping visitors enjoy the island.
The name "Mácher" might have come from an old Italian word, "Maschera." Over time, it changed to "Mácheres" and then finally to "Mácher."
