Máximo Jerez Tellería (born June 8, 1818, in León, Nicaragua – died August 12, 1881, in Washington, D.C., USA) was an important Nicaraguan politician, lawyer, and military leader in the 1800s. He is known as one of the most important Liberal thinkers in Nicaragua's history. He also worked hard to unite the countries of Central America.

Early Political Life

Máximo Jerez believed strongly in Liberalism, a political idea that supports individual rights and freedoms. He was a key leader in the movement that wanted to bring Central American countries closer together. This idea was very popular among many leaders at the time.

Working with William Walker

In 1855, Máximo Jerez worked with Francisco Castellón Sanabria to bring William Walker to Nicaragua. Walker was a "filibuster," which means he was an adventurer who tried to take control of countries. On October 31, 1855, Jerez became the Minister of Foreign Relations in Walker's temporary government. This government was officially led by Patricio Rivas.

Jerez ran for president in 1856, but no one won enough votes to be the clear winner. Walker then decided that President Rivas should call for new elections. However, Rivas soon changed his mind and ended his relationship with Walker.

Leading Nicaragua

On January 23, 1857, Máximo Jerez formed a special government with Tomás Martínez. Martínez was a Conservative leader, which meant he had different political ideas than Jerez. Despite their differences, they worked together as joint Presidents of Nicaragua. They led the country from June 24, 1857, until October or November of that same year.

Defining Borders

Later, Máximo Jerez became Nicaragua's representative to Costa Rica. On April 15, 1858, he signed an important agreement called the Cañas–Jerez Treaty. This treaty helped to clearly define the borders between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This was a very important step for both countries.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1876, Máximo Jerez tried to organize a group from El Salvador to remove the temporary government of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Alfaro. However, this effort was not successful.

Máximo Jerez Tellería is remembered as a significant figure in Nicaraguan history. In the city of León, where he was born, there is a statue built to honor him. This statue reminds people of his contributions to the country.
