Målilla is a small town in Hultsfred Municipality, Kalmar County, Sweden. About 1,500 people live there.
This town is famous for its extreme temperatures. It holds the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Sweden! On June 29, 1947, it reached a scorching +38 °C (100.4 °F). This record is shared with another place called Ultuna. Målilla has also seen some of the lowest temperatures in southern Sweden, dropping to −33.8 °C.
Because of its wild weather, Målilla has a giant 15-meter (about 50-foot) thermometer in the middle of its main roundabout. It was built in 2000, but a car hit it soon after, and its "bulb" (the part that shows the temperature) had to be replaced!
Fun Activities and Sports
Speedway Racing
Målilla is super well-known for motorcycle speedway racing. It's a thrilling sport where motorcycles race around an oval track. The town has a very successful team called Dackarna. They have won the Swedish championship six times!
The team's name has changed a few times because of sponsors, like Luxo Stars and Team Svelux. But they always went back to their original name, Dackarna. They won the Swedish Speedway league in 2021. Since 1993, they have raced at the Skrotfrag Arena.
Before that, the team raced at the Gamla Målilla Motorstadion from 1935 to 1992. That old stadium was eventually taken down.
Målilla's Climate
Målilla has a climate that changes a lot between seasons. It's known as a humid continental climate. This means it has cold winters and warm summers. For example, in the past, January and February usually had an average temperature of about -3 °C (27 °F).
In recent years, the weather has been changing. Summers have become warmer on average. The average high temperature in July between 2002 and 2014 was 23.4 °C (74.1 °F). The highest temperature recorded since the all-time record was 37.2 °C (99 °F) in July 2022.
Even though Målilla is famous for its extreme temperatures, its overall climate is quite normal for the area. It tends to have slightly warmer days and colder nights than nearby places, especially in spring. For instance, April high temperatures averaged 13 °C (55 °F) from 2002 to 2014, but nights could still be around freezing.
Målilla has also seen some unusually warm temperatures for certain months. It has reached over 20 °C (68 °F) in March, 28.8 °C (83.8 °F) in April, and 23 °C (73 °F) in October. These are very warm for Sweden during those times of year! However, the 38 °C (100.4 °F) record from June 1947 is the only national monthly record Målilla currently holds.
