Professor Hiç's Early Career
Mükerrem Hiç started his journey in academics at Istanbul University in 1953. He began as a teaching assistant in the Faculty of Economics. At the same time, he was working on his Ph.D. degree there. A Ph.D. is the highest university degree you can get.
Studying and Teaching in the USA
In 1955, he went to Harvard University in the USA. He joined a special one-year program at their Business School. The next year, from 1956 to 1957, he taught a subject called Managerial Accounting at Harvard. This shows he was very good at economics even early on.
After his time in the USA, he returned to Istanbul University. He finished his Ph.D. in economics in 1958.
Becoming a Professor
From 1958 to 1962, Mükerrem Hiç worked as an assistant professor at Istanbul University. In 1962, he became an associate professor. This meant he had more responsibility and was a permanent part of the university staff.
In 1964, he had a special year called a sabbatical. During this time, he taught at Princeton University in the USA. This was part of a special scholarship program. When he came back to Turkey in 1968, he became a full professor. This is the highest rank for a university teacher.
Later Academic and Public Roles
As a full professor, Mükerrem Hiç was invited to teach at many other universities. He was a visiting professor at Boğaziçi University (which used to be called Robert College) from 1973 to 1974. He also taught at Columbia University in the USA from 1976 to 1977. He even taught at the Turkish Military Academy from 1977 to 1978.
Working with the World Bank
Later, he became the director of the Institute of Economic Development at Istanbul University. From 1980 to 1983, he also worked as a consultant for the World Bank. The World Bank is an international organization that helps countries with their economic development.
Serving in Parliament
In 1983, Mükerrem Hiç was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. This was an important time because it was the first election after a period of military rule. While he was in parliament, he gave advice on economic issues. He also worked on relations between Turkey and the EU. Turkey was trying to join the EU at that time.
Return to Istanbul University
In 1987, Professor Hiç went back to Istanbul University. He started a brand new economics program that was taught entirely in English. He was the head of this department from 1987 to 1996. In 1996, he became a professor emeritus. This means he retired but still taught special Ph.D. level courses at the university.
