Murugesu Balasundaram (Tamil: முருகேசு பாலசுந்தரம்; born April 7, 1903 – died December 15, 1965) was an important person from Sri Lanka. He was a Ceylon Tamil lawyer and a politician. He also served as a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.
Early Life and Education
Murugesu Balasundaram was born on April 7, 1903. His father was Reverend K. S. Murugesu, a Methodist clergyman.
He went to school at Kilner College in Jaffna and then at Royal College, Colombo. After finishing school, he studied at the Ceylon University College. In 1923, he earned a B.Sc. degree there.
He was very good at his studies and received a special scholarship. This allowed him to go to Trinity Hall, Cambridge in England. There, he earned another degree, a B.A..
Career as a Lawyer and Politician
After returning to Ceylon (which is now Sri Lanka), Balasundaram first worked as a journalist for a short time. Later, he became a lawyer, known as an advocate. This meant he could represent people in court.
Balasundaram was also interested in helping his community. In 1924, he became one of the people who started the Jaffna Youth Congress. This group worked to improve things for young people in Jaffna.
He later joined a political party called the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, also known as the Federal Party. He ran for election in the Kopay Electoral District. In March 1960, he won the election and became a Member of Parliament. This was a big achievement, as it meant he could speak for the people of Kopay in the country's Parliament.
He was re-elected in another election in July 1960, showing that people trusted him. However, in the 1965 election, he ran as an independent candidate, meaning he was not part of a specific party. He was not re-elected that time.
Murugesu Balasundaram passed away on December 15, 1965.
