Melathu Veettil Raghavan (born May 5, 1933 – died November 9, 2014) was an important political leader from Kerala, India. He was known as a veteran Communist leader and served as a Minister in the Kerala state government.
He was the General Secretary of the Communist Marxist Party (CMP). This party worked together with the United Democratic Front (UDF), which is a group of political parties. Before starting the CMP, he was a key leader in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)).
Mr. Raghavan left the CPI(M) after disagreements within the party. He believed in working with other parties like the Kerala Congress and Indian Union Muslim League. However, the CPI(M) wanted to keep these parties out of their main group, the Left Democratic Front (LDF). After leaving, he formed his own party, the CMP, and later joined the UDF. He served as a minister in UDF governments several times.
He came from Kannur district in the North Malabar area of Kerala. This region is developing quickly. Raghavan helped set up the first medical college in India that was run by a cooperative group. This was the Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur district. He also played a big role in creating the first Visha Chikitsa Kendram, which is a centre for treating snake bites, in Pappinisseri, Kannur. Another important project he started was a Snake Park in Dharmasala, which is now a popular place for tourists to visit.
