Stefan Corbin Burnett, known by his stage name MC Ride or simply Ride, is an American rapper, songwriter, and visual artist. He is the lead singer of the experimental hip hop group Death Grips.

He started his music journey in the late 1990s. In 2010, he formed Death Grips with drummer Zach Hill and keyboardist Andy Morin. With the group, Ride became known for his strong, energetic rapping style and mysterious lyrics.

Early Life and Art Studies

Stefan Corbin Burnett was born in Sacramento, California. Not much is known about his early life, including his exact birthday. He studied visual arts at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. However, he left college to work with his brother, Isaac, who is also a musician known as Swank Daddy.

Music Career Journey

Burnett first performed under the name Mxlplx. He formed a hip hop group called Fyre with his brother, Swank, and another rapper named Young G. This group stopped when his brother got married and could no longer continue. During this time, Stefan also worked at a restaurant and a bakery in Sacramento. He also worked on his painting skills.

Forming Death Grips

In 2010, Burnett started using the name "Ride." He then formed Death Grips with his neighbor, Zach Hill. Zach was already famous for his drumming in the band Hella. Zach soon invited his friend and music producer, Andy Morin, to join them. They all started making music together.

In March 2011, Death Grips released their first music collection, an EP (Extended Play) simply called Death Grips. Just one month later, they released a mixtape called Exmilitary. This mixtape was very popular and got a lot of attention from music critics.

Albums and New Music

The group signed with Epic Records in 2012. They quickly released their first official album, The Money Store. Later in 2012, the group decided to release their second album, No Love Deep Web, on their own. This was because Epic Records wanted to wait until 2013 to release it. Because of this, Epic Records decided to part ways with the band.

Death Grips continued to release new music. They put out their third album, Government Plates, in 2013. After that, they released a double album called The Powers That B. The first part of this album, called ... on the Moon, came out in 2014. Every song on this part included vocal sounds from the famous Icelandic singer Björk.

Group Changes and New Releases

On July 2, 2014, Death Grips announced they were breaking up. They even posted a photo of the announcement written on a napkin on their Twitter page. However, the group surprised fans by returning in January 2015. They released an instrumental soundtrack called Fashion Week. This was followed by Jenny Death in March, which was the second part of The Powers That B.

In March 2016, they released another instrumental project, Interview 2016. Their fifth studio album, Bottomless Pit, came out in May 2016. This album was special because it was the first full album with Ride's vocals since their earlier announcement of breaking up.

Death Grips released an EP called ... (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix) in May 2017. This was a single 22-minute mix of eight different songs. Their sixth studio album, Year of the Snitch, was released in June 2018. In June 2019, Death Grips shared a previously unreleased special mix called Gmail and the Restraining Orders for Warp Records' 30th anniversary.

Artistic Style

Ride's singing style has been described as a powerful and artistic way of rapping. It sounds like a mix of hardcore punk music and spoken word performances. His voice is often called "paint-peeling barks and startling yelps" because of how strong and raw it is. Critics have noted that his voice is so strong it almost acts like another instrument in the music.

Meaning in Lyrics

Ride's lyrics are often described as chants and powerful speeches. They can be hard to understand at times, but they are full of deep, sometimes dark, or intense thoughts. His lyrics explore many different topics. These include feelings of being alone, money problems, mental health, and ideas about the future with technology.

One writer said that Ride's lyrics show he is paying close attention to the world's problems. He might not offer solutions, but he definitely highlights what he sees.

Inspiration and Visual Art

In an interview, Ride mentioned that he likes musicians like Jimi Hendrix. However, he gets more inspiration from his own inner struggles than from other people's achievements.

Besides music, he also has a career as a visual artist. His artwork usually features dark, black-and-white portraits. His first art show took place in Los Angeles' Chinatown from January 7 to January 28, 2017.

Personal Life

Even though his rapping style is very intense, Stefan Burnett is known to be quiet and private in interviews. In a 2012 interview, he said he doesn't like to share his personal life with the public. His bandmate Zach Hill has also described him as "reclusive" and "super private."

Burnett has many tattoos. Many of them feature dark or mysterious images.
