The MGM Grand Detroit is a large resort hotel and casino located in Detroit, Michigan. It is one of three casino resorts in Detroit. It is also one of four in the bigger Detroit–Windsor area. This fancy resort opened on July 29, 1999. Its grand opening included celebrities like Ashanti and Kid Rock. There were also exciting fireworks. It was the first luxury casino resort of its kind in a major city outside Las Vegas. Detroit is one of the biggest American cities to have these types of casino resort hotels.

History of MGM Grand Detroit
How the Casino Started
In 2005, the MGM Grand Detroit Casino almost got sold. This happened because its parent company, MGM MIRAGE, was buying another casino company. That company owned the MotorCity Casino. Michigan state laws do not allow one owner to have more than one casino in the state. Because of this, MGM MIRAGE had to sell either the MGM Grand Detroit or the MotorCity Casino. They had many buyers interested in MGM Grand Detroit. In the end, they decided to sell the MotorCity Casino to Marian Bayoff Ilitch.
Building the Permanent Casino
On December 13, 2005, the Michigan Gaming Control Board approved plans for a new, permanent casino. This new building would have a large casino area. It would also include 401 hotel rooms. An eight-story parking garage was also part of the plan. This new casino was built a few blocks from the temporary one. It also has a big meeting space for conferences. There is a theater that can seat 1,200 people for live shows. The casino also rebuilt 3rd Street to make traffic move more easily.
Grand Opening and Design
The permanent MGM Grand Detroit casino opened its doors on October 3, 2007. Many Hollywood stars came to the grand opening party. A special Celebrity Poker Match was filmed there for TV. The MGM Grand Detroit is located across from the DTE Energy Headquarters. This area has a nice reflecting pool and landscaped gardens. Many designers worked on the project. These included Hamilton Anderson Associates and the SmithGroup. Other designers were Cleo Design, Carol Harris, Lawrence Lee, Toni Chi, and Super Potato. The main architects were Paul Tonti and Thomas Sherry. In 2007, DTE Energy announced plans to make the area around its headquarters into a beautiful urban space. This area would have parks, walkways, and a reflecting pool next to the MGM Grand Detroit.
Location and Visitors
Just across the river from Detroit is Caesars Windsor in Canada. About six million people visit Caesars Windsor every year. More than fifteen million people cross the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel each year. These connect Detroit and Windsor. It is estimated that 46 million people live within a 300-mile (480 km) drive of Metro Detroit. Since the year 2000, Detroit has seen more and more money from its casinos each year. The city expected to collect a lot of money from casino taxes in 2007. This was even more after the new casino resorts opened in 2008.
