Małgorzata Szumowska (born 26 February 1973) is a talented Polish film director, screenwriter, and producer. She was born in Kraków, Poland.
Her film In the Name Of won the Teddy Award for Best Feature in 2013. It also received the Grand Prix at the 32nd annual Istanbul Film Festival. Her movie Body was shown in the main competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. Szumowska won the Silver Bear for Best Director for Body. In 2018, she received the Jury Grand Prix at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival for her film Mug.

Małgorzata Szumowska's Career
Szumowska first studied history of art at the Jagiellonian University for two years. After that, she decided to study film. She graduated from the famous National Film School in Łódź. As a student, she made a short film called Cisza (Silence). This documentary tried to show the simple life of a Polish family in the countryside. It was ranked as one of the best student films in the school's history.
In 2001, Szumowska became a member of the European Film Academy. This is a group that celebrates European cinema. In 2016, she was part of the jury at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. The jury was led by the famous actress Meryl Streep. In 2018, she was also chosen to be a jury member at the 75th Venice International Film Festival. This jury was led by director Guillermo del Toro.
In 2020, her film Never Gonna Snow Again, which she directed with Michał Englert, was chosen to represent Poland. It was submitted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Early Films and Recognition
Szumowska made her first full-length film, Szczęśliwy człowiek (Happy Man), in 2001. This film was nominated for a European Film Award. The story is about three people facing big challenges who still try to find happiness.
Her next film, Ono (Stranger), explored the bond between a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. The mother tries to prepare her child for the world outside. The story becomes more complex when the woman faces health issues.
In 2005, Szumowska made a short film called Ojciec (Father). This film was part of a larger project called Solidarność, Solidarność (Solidarity, Solidarity). This project featured thirteen short stories by Polish directors to celebrate the Solidarity movement. Szumowska's film was based on her own father's experiences and used old film footage from his documentaries.
A big moment in Szumowska's career came in 2008 with 33 sceny z życia (33 Scenes from Life). This film starred Julia Jentsch and won a special award at the Locarno International Film Festival. The movie was inspired by Szumowska's own life, but she says it's not exactly her autobiography. It tells the story of Julia, a talented photographer with a comfortable life, whose world changes unexpectedly.
International Projects
In 2011, Szumowska completed her international film project, Elles. This movie starred the well-known actress Juliette Binoche. Elles first showed to the world at the Toronto International Film Festival. It tells the story of Anne, a journalist from Paris who is researching the lives of young women. Her research introduces her to two girls, Charlotte and Alice, whose lives are very different from her own.

The film In the Name Of is about a Catholic priest named Adam. He lives in a village in rural Poland and works with teenagers who have behavioral problems. Adam tries to help the young people he works with. The film explores his personal challenges and choices.
Personal Life
Małgorzata Szumowska comes from a family of journalists. Her parents were Maciej Szumowski and Dorota Terakowska. Her brother, Wojciech Szumowski, is also a documentary film director.
She has been married to actor Mateusz Kościukiewicz since 2011. They have a daughter named Alina, who was born on 3 December 2012. Małgorzata also has a son named Maciej from an earlier relationship with editor Jacek Drosio.
